Press coverage in Sweden

Summary

  • Press in Sweden has reported on levels of lead in water from coffee machines. The reported levels would by a normal daily intake not come to the limits recommended by the WHO, but are above the usual requirements for drink water companies.
  • The de Jong DUKE machines potentially affected by these reports are the bean2cup models, since they contain brass components. The instant and filterfresh models are not affected since they have no components containing any brass which are in contact with water, ingredients or coffee.
  • The results within this particular test vary widely, differ from other tests in Sweden and, notwithstanding our request, we have not been provided with the details of the situation, the test and its methodology. This raises questions & concerns about these tests and we are unable to verify their relevance and reliability.
  • In the design of its machines, de Jong DUKE works according applicable norms, regulations and guidelines including CE, EU regulation 1935/2004, 178/2002 and 852/2004 and we are not aware of problems elsewhere.
  • In response to the reports we have tested several machines following procedures recommended by NSF. The results are consistent and all show levels of lead contents below the recommendations of the WHO and drink water guidelines.
  • We will continue to monitor the situation, but at the moment have not identified reason for severe concern regarding the equipment.
  • For customers with a lower tolerance level for the lead-content in water than the usual guidelines, replacement components are available.
